The Reason I’m Here

internet-guide

I have fought this for some time, this place.

For a couple of years I have whispered and dreamed about a website that helps people do what I do. In my mind I have online courses, and video tutorials, and step-by-step eBooks that will show you how to do all sorts of things. But for some reason I’ve never really put it out there.

Frankly, I’ve been a little scared.

The Foundation

For the past 16+ years I have worked in the technology field. Ten years with a large telecommunications company, and the last six working for myself. I have helped countless businesses and individuals with all kinds of technology problems. I have set up multi-location networks, built dozens of websites, and repaired anything from an iPhone to an xBox; from laptops to servers. I even repaired a lady’s vacuum she brought to my shop.

I still wonder how that one came about.

That’s all well and good, but a lot people can do that. That’s not what got me out of bed in the morning. The work was both easy and challenging, both boring and captivating. But the stories…oh, the stories kept me coming back.

The Motivation

I’ll never forget visiting the home of the 70-something-year-old grandmother whose computer I fixed in 10 minutes, only to spend the next 45 playing Chris Tomlin songs for her on her son’s rickety old guitar. She could no longer play the piano at her church after 40 years. We both cried as we worshipped.

I’ll never forget telling the mom of three that her hard drive had completely crashed and the only copies of 14 years worth of pictures of all her kids were unrecoverable. We both stood in the showroom of my shop and cried, because I couldn’t get them back.

I’ll never forget the countless smiles and hugs I got from all people of all ages when I said the following:

The battery was just dead. I can order you another. You don’t need a new computer.

I can fix that right now, in just a second. No need to pay me. Come see me again sometime.

I was able to recover those files you accidentally deleted. Let me show you how to back everything up.

They said it would be how much? No sir, I can get that part for about half of that. I’ll even show you how to put it in.

My heart is to teach and empower people to manage the technology in their lives. I love the look on someone’s face when they get it; when the pieces fall in place and they understand a concept that I have explained. It tickles my fancy. It drives my passion.

The Promise

So here, in this place, I will explain how to transfer pictures from your phone to your computer. I will show you how to make your computer continue to run fast, like the day you bought it. I will demonstrate how to remove that virus your teenage son put on your work laptop. I will show you how to play the video on your phone directly to the TV.

However, I also will challenge you to lead a morally responsible digital life, because everything we do online is permanent. I will teach you about Instagram, and Snapchat, and all the other places that have the potential to steal your child’s innocence. I will pose hard questions, and offer solid answers on how to protect yourself and those you love from the dangers of the digital world.

I really care about this stuff. And I want to help in any way I can. Any question, any platform, any device, any topic. I promise to give you all the knowledge I’ve gained over the past one-and-a-half decades. And if I don’t know the answer, we’ll figure it out together.

Here’s to taming the technology in our lives.
